Last Saturday at North Road saw Glossop 1st XI win the toss and ask second-placed Cheetham Hill to bat first in conditions likely to help the home side’s bowling attack. Sure enough a sustained period of tight seam bowling by Mark Usher and Oliver Kenyon, helped by an excellent run-out by David Wilde, reduced the visitors to 73-5 at the half -way stage of their 50 overs. Only Tufail of the visiting batting made any progress, reaching 47 before he lost his wicket. Once again young Matt Sonczak took the honours with his 4-10 as Cheetham Hill managed only 139 all out in the 48th over. Glossop’s impressive fielding and catching were too much for the visitors.
In reply Glossop’s opening pair of Dale Pennington & Lee Dale got them off to their usual brisk start in pursuit of their modest target. Losing his partner with 30 on the board the pro played a responsible innings of 59, ably supported by Sonczak with 31 n/o as the home side reached their target for the loss of just 4 wickets . The maximum five points takes Glossop clear at the top of the LCL first division with another home fixture ( v Thornham ) to come next Saturday. Clearly Glossop are the team in form at this early stage of the season.
