Saturday’s visit to league leaders Denton West led to a thrilling but ultimately disappointing defeat off the last ball of the final over. Dale Pennington’s 51 helped Glossop to a total of 213 -8 after their 50 overs. In reply West seemed for most of the game to be heading for their first defeat of the season in spite of a solid 85 from Hamish Dunlop until the final over which saw Will Hargreaves bowl with the scores tied. Five dot balls kept the result in doubt but a boundary of the last ball gave the points to West. Glossop 2nds were overtaken at the top of Div 2 by West 2nds after their 94 run defeat at North Road.
On Sunday Glossop 1st entertained Dukinfield in a match reduced to 20 overs a side because of the cold, rainy, unseasonal weather conditions. The home side reached 153-7 in their overs, but further rained restricted Dukinfield’s reply to a mere 14 overs in which they were required to try to reach a revised target of 119 runs, or be bowled out by the home side. In conditions totally unsuited to cricket they managed 71-8 (Hargreaves 4-23) so neither side could claim a victory since a result match has to have at least 20 overs per side. The points were shared 2-2. Glossop 2nds recovered from their setback the previous day by beating Dukinfield in another restricted game ( 40 overs). Dukinfield managed 170 – 8 a score reached by Glossop for the loss of just 4 wickets, so the struggle for top spot in Div 2 continues.
This weekend sees Glossop 1st travel to Flowery Field on Saturday, and on Sunday the first XI play Streford at home in the Walkden Cup semi-finals, whilst the 2nd XI travel to Roe Green in their Hulme Cup semi, both teams seeking to reach the cup finals for the second consecutive year.
