Glossop 1XI narrowly lost out to a relatively strong DSL side on Saturday at North Road seeing them fall further behind Prestwich and Denton West at the top of the table. Batting first Lee Dale fell early on, but two half centuries from Dale Pennington and Oliver Kenyon in an otherwise ordinary batting display, ensured Glossop posted a competitive total of 199.
Skipper Will Hargreaves turned to spin early on in the DSL chase, Alex Coates and himself bowling 20 overs a piece, picking up 3 and 4 wickets respectively as a flurry of wickets seemed to have swung the momentum in Glossop’s favour. The game looked to be all but won for the home side when DSL required nearly 10 an over for the last 6 overs, with only three wickets remaining, but some brutal late hitting from Ben Tighe guided the Denton side over the line with one ball to spare. A disappointing loss from a strong position.
The 2XI saw off the same opponents with ease in the reverse fixture, rolling DSL for 105 inside 45 overs with the help of some disciplined bowling and an extraordinary catch from Andrew Dyson. The home side struggled to cope with a brilliant opening spell from Jack Leyland (3-17) and Will Coates (2-18), whilst Alice Dyson (2-17), skipper David Allen (2-16) and a run out from James Atkinson continued the good work as the home side collapsed under the pressure.
In reply, Will Coates and Daniel Senior brought up their century partnership in 20 overs as Glossop, 111-0, cruised to victory by 10 wickets, Coates finishing unbeaten on 36* and Senior 70*. An impressive win with a somewhat depleted team on the day.
